To celebrate its 40th anniversary Syndicat Interdepartmental Por l’Assainisment de l’Agglomeration Parisienne (SIAAP) the Paris municipal sewerage company is sponsoring an open-air photographic exhibition in Paris entitled Chiottissme – or boggism if you like.
The tongue-in-cheek exhibition is a humourous celebration of the toilet as refuge, art and movie star. It features 46 photographs by 46 different photographers from 31 countries.
But it does have a serious message. It aims to draw attention to the fact that there are 2.6 billion people across the globe who do not have proper toilets and 1.2 billion people who have no toilets at all. Not only that but, according to figures from UNICEF, in these regions which lack sewerage systems water-born disease affects one child every 20 seconds.
