The Doctor is in

Van 2As the UK General Election campaign hots up the National Health Service is set to be one of the key areas of debate. The Labour Party has fired the first shot across the Tories’ bows by re-hashing one of its old posters from the 1970s.

Back in the mid-1970s Labour was not working and long queues snaked towards the unemployment office according to a poster campaign. Now, the Conservatives are under fire in Labour’s poster critique of the Tory’s NHS record – The Doctor can’t see you now.

At Drain Doctor the doctor is always in and at your convenience. It’s not just a tagline. The Doctor will see you now!

We are the country’s premier combined emergency plumbing and drain repair service – providing a genuine 24 hour a day, 365 days a year service across the country with fixed prices and no call out charges.

We’re going for 15 from 15

Drain Doctor's convention was held at the Crowne Plaza in Bruges

Drain Doctor’s convention was held at the Crowne Plaza in Bruges

Drain Doctor Plumbing has voiced its commitment to further expand its business and has set ’15 from 15’ – 15 per cent growth in 2015 – as its target at its twenty first annual franchisee convention.

Everyone at Drain Doctor who attended the great long weekend of business presentations and social events at the Crowne Plaza hotel in the historic Belgian city of Bruges heard a bullish opening presentation from chairman Freddie Mitman, who is optimistic about sustained growth prospects for the company throughout 2015 and beyond.

He said: “Now that we are into our third decade in business it is essential that as a group we are firing on all cylinders in order to make strong progress. The past three years have been great. We established a break-through in acquiring jobs through the internet, national accounts grew by more than 15 per cent and some positive marketing was done in many areas. We need to keep that momentum by going for 15 per cent in 2015.”

Among the speakers at the convention who picked up on the same theme was Mary Kennedy-Thompson, president of Mr Rooter – Drain Doctor’s equivalent in the USA. She stressed the importance of maintaining momentum and the need to have a powerful purpose and a passion for what the business is doing.

She used the analogy of a motorcycle journey to explain. “Business has changed pace. It used to be made up of periods of ‘push’ and periods of rest. Now the need to grow requires more constant ‘push’. We must learn to ‘thrive in the push’, because time won’t stop and wait for us.”

She said that we must keep going – like a motorcycle – because when we stop we fall over.

“A certain speed of forward momentum must be kept up because it is this momentum that makes it easier to circumnavigate the obstacles you will need to go around, and move fast enough to negotiate bad things.

“Life is like riding a motorcycle. Your bike will go where you are looking. So if you’re coming to a corner don’t stare and get fixated on the hedge, look around the bend where you want to go. The bike will be capable of getting you around the corner.”

Economy on a roll as flush consumers spend on luxury toilet paper

Drain Doctor luxury toilet tissue loo paperIt looks like British consumers are feeling ‘flushed’ now that the economy seems to have turned a corner and zero inflation is making everyone feel as though they have a little more cash in their pockets.

Sales of luxury loo roll – defined as anything quilted and two to four-ply – are up in the UK according to new figures, signalling that the economic downturn is over and good times are on the horizon. Experts say that it’s incontrovertible proof that the economy is growing because people are willing to shell out extra cash to pamper their bums!

A Euromonitor report found that the UK stands out among the European countries as only 5.3 per cent of £1.9billion toilet paper sales were made up from the cheaper brands.

However, the same report found that in Europe our German and Italian cousins are thriftier when it comes to the loo. According to the survey they prefer economy paper to the luxury stuff – – favoured over here according to a report in The Guardian.

The story featured twice on the telly this week. A BBC Breakfast business item on the economy majored on the Euromonitor findings while Matthew Wright took up the topic on his Channel 5 morning magazine show The Wright Stuff in a more lighthearted way by asking viewers if they thought that luxury toilet paper was in fact evil. The show took more calls on this topic than any other during the morning. One of the guests – Christine Hamilton – talked about Izal – that hard, shiny tracing paper often found littering the floor in school loos of a certain vintage. Does anyone remember that? Comments please.

We were reminded of many an uncomfortable visit to an institutional loo – be it at school or elsewhere – when we would have been grateful for a few sheets of two-ply tissue.

Let the good times roll.

Don’t be an ass – Drain Doctor will get you out of clinch

Photo of Nilo

Photo of Nilo which appears in The Daily Mail

This story about a donkey in Switzerland getting stuck in a manhole got us giggling this week.

The Daily Mail reported that 13 year old Nilo the donkey, nicknamed Shrek by the local fire and rescue team, had escaped from a local petting zoo and found himself in a tight spot when he fell into an open manhole in the Swiss town of Pratteln.

It got us thinking about all sorts of other odd things that Drain Doctor technicians find down drains. As far as we know we haven’t found a donkey but we have found a boa constrictor. There was also the case of the prized pet Netherland dwarf rabbit Minni that had climbed into a soil stack pipe in Bristol. Using specialist CCTV equipment the rabbit was found stuck in the drain. The local Drain Doctor had to dig up the patio to reach the rabbit. It was rescued and reunited with its grateful owner while the drain and patio were replaced.

The Drain Doctor franchise covering Suffolk once received a panic phone call at 9.30am from a lady in Stowmarket, Suffolk. She was due to leave home to catch a flight for a family holiday. However, she had just dropped her car keys down the toilet! Recognising the urgency and always ready to display dazzling levels of service, Drain Doctor customer service representative Daisy Simpson immediately diverted a technician who was just 15 minutes away from another job to answer the emergency call.

He arrived within 20 minutes, removed the toilet pan and retrieved the customer’s car keys. The job was completed quickly and efficiently and the customer was able to leave in time to get to the airport and catch her flight.

And talking of dropping things down the toilet, in Glasgow recently one Drain Doctor customer’s special day was saved when her lost engagement ring was found in a blocked drain after being accidently flushed down the toilet. The lady had been told by another drainage firm that the ring was beyond recovery but our technician persevered and the ring was recovered.

We have found some other strange things in drains that have raised eyebrows. One franchisee found a bra and a pair of underpants blocking a drain in a Wetherspoons pub. Another had to rescue a £10,000 diamond necklace.

Whatever the emergency there is nothing too odd for Drain Doctor so don’t be an Ass like Nilo; if you find yourself in a clinch call Drain Doctor and we will pull out all the stops to help save the day.

Chester Drain Doctor Called to Aftermath of Lightning Strike

While storm force winds and rain lashed the North Wales coast a technician from the Chester franchise of Drain Doctor Plumbing and Drainage Ltd (www.draindoctor.co.uk) was called out to repair a burst pipe in a roof caused by a lightning strike.

During a recent storm a cottage on the North Wales coast was hit by lighting. The chimney pot was demolished. Masonry fell through the cottage roof damaging a water pipe in the attic causing water to flood into the house. The electricity supply was also cut during the storm.

Drain Doctor was called to the scene but was unable to access the property for 24 hours while emergency services made the area safe.

Technician Barry Wardell got access to the pipe through the roof space. However, the hole in the roof meant that he was exposed to the elements from the outside while he worked making the work challenging.

During high winds and lashing rain Barry had to climb on to the roof and access the burst pipe through the hole in the roof left by the falling chimney. Despite the adverse weather conditions Barry was able to make the repair in just over an hour.

Franchisee Clive Tucker said: “This was a challenging job undertaken in terrible weather conditions on one of the most exposed parts of the North Wales coast.

“It is another example of how Drain Doctor pulls out all the stops to get the job done and provide the ‘dazzling’ levels of service that our customers have come to expect.

“Our customers get fixed-price, no obligation quotes, a complete guarantee on all our work, and a full 24 hour per day seven day per week service with no call out charges – so people pay the same price for work at any time of day or night and whatever the weather!”

Launched in the UK in 1993, Drain Doctor Plumbing quickly grew to become the country’s largest combined emergency plumbing and drain repair service. It now provides a 24 hour a day, 365 days a year service across the country with each franchise run as an independent business.

Today is World Toilet Day – Let’s give a sh..

A few weeks ago we had a look at all those awareness days out there with a nod to ‘Toilet Repair Week’ in the US. There are a huge number of these awareness events in the calendar – some more worthy than others; days like World Toilet Day, which aims to highlight the plight of 2.5 billion people without access to a clean, private toilet.

“I give a shit, do you?” is the plea of the 2012 global World Toilet Day campaign put together by the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the World Toilet Organization (WTO). Observed annually on 19 November, World Toilet Day aims to break the taboo around the toilets and draw attention to the existing global sanitation challenge.  Sanitation is a fundamental human right. World Toilet Day was created to raise global awareness of the daily struggle for proper dignified sanitation that a staggering 2.5 billion people continue to face.

“Can you imagine not having a toilet?,” asks Saskia Castelein, advocacy and communication officer at WSSCC. “Can you imagine not having privacy when you need to relieve yourself? Although unthinkable for those living in wealthy parts of the world, this is a harsh reality for many – in fact, one in three people on this globe does not have access to a toilet! The World Toilet Day Campaign aims to raise awareness, inspire action, and make sanitation and hygiene for all a reality in the 21st century.”

The benefits of proper sanitation, good hygiene and clean drinking water on health and well being, educational attainment and economic growth are increasingly gaining recognition by the international development community. World Toilet Day is an online advocate for better sanitation and we would like to do our bit by blogging about it.

It’s something we take for granted here in the UK and we only realise how fortunate we are when there is a problem. If you experience any difficulties with you plumbing, toilets or drains don’t forget that Drain Doctor is only a phone call away on  0800 3357 999
