Home and business owners get flood warning

Drain Doctor CCTV inspection

Drain Doctor carries out CCTV drain surveys and uses a number of techniques to clear blockages

Homeowners and businesses have received a winter flood warning from the UK’s largest combined plumbing and drainage business. Companies could face massive disruption over the coming months if they don’t take steps to prevent flooding now.

Drain Doctor Plumbing Ltd (www.draindoctor.co.uk) is urging homeowners and business people to make sure drains are free of blockages. This will help to minimise the risk of flooding as we head towards the two months of the year (January and February) which the Meteorological Office says usually combine the highest rainfall of the year with the lowest temperatures. A thaw after heavy snowfall, if combined with rain which helps to melt the ice, can lead to huge amounts of water being released into drains.

Preliminary weather forecasts (http://www.ukweatherforecast.co.uk/winter-forecast-2013/) for January and February are for colder than average months with more frequent snowfall than in recent years.

According to recent figures from the Association of British Insurers 47,000 UK bus

inesses were hit by flooding in 2012 and total flooding claims with insurers for households and businesses exceeded £1.1 billion. However, a simple CCTV drain survey can help to identify any blockages or potential problems.

Drain Doctor Plumbing chairman Freddie Mitman said: “Many people think flooding is something that won’t happen to them but the risk is there. Being unprepared simply means the chance of an incident increases.

“Although insurance policies can cover damage to property, damage to businesses in terms of lost working hours and even lost clients is often not covered. This is why it is vitally important for businesses to take the time now to make sure their drains are clear of any blockages and are in good working order.”

As well as a CCTV drain survey, there are a number of other measures businesses can take to protect their property. This includes taking advice from a specialist flood surveyor, fitting water resistant doors and window frames or speaking with specialist organisations such as the Environment Agency or the Flood Protection Association.

Nottingham Drain Doctor signs new 10-year agreement

Drain Doctor franchise contract

Pictured signing their new ten-year contract are (left to right) Yvonne Muntaner, Freddie Mitman, Juan Muntaner and Jan Mitman.

The owners of the Nottingham franchise of Drain Doctor Plumbing have marked a decade in the business by signing a new ten-year franchise agreement.

Drain Doctor Plumbing is one of the few franchisors in the UK to offer its franchisees ten-year agreements, underlining the confidence it places in its franchisees. The agreements allow people such as Juan and Yvonne Muntaner to run their own businesses under the ‘umbrella’ of a national brand.

The Muntaners launched their franchise business in Nottingham in 2003 and later expanded to cover the Peterborough franchise area as well.

Yvonne said: “We are delighted to have been a Drain Doctor franchise business for ten years and we are looking forward to another decade. The fact we have been part of its network for all this time is a tribute to its system.”

Over the past ten years the Muntaners have grown their business. They took on the Peterborough franchise business in 2010. They now have four technicians in four fully-equipped vans and two part-time office staff.

“To celebrate our first ten years with Drain Doctor we have moved into new offices in Bourne, Lincolnshire. We have been working from home since we launched.

“We are working towards further expanding our business by adding another four technicians and four vans with two full-time office staff by the end of 2015.”

Yvonne added: “Despite the ‘double-dip’ recession it has still been possible to grow the business sustainably with hard work and dedication to Drain Doctor’s proven formula. It offers a recession-resistant opportunity where we can be independent operators running our own business but with all the back-up that comes with being part of a large national organisation.

“We are delighted to have signed up for a further ten years with Drain Doctor – it allows us to continue to grow our business.”

“The fact that Juan and Yvonne have now signed up for a second decade is a tribute to the business model which we have developed,” said Freddie Mitman, chair and founder of Drain Doctor Plumbing. “It underlines the success which franchisees are experiencing in continuing to build their businesses.”

Drain Doctor celebrates 20 years

Peterborough-based Drain Doctor Plumbing

Jan and Freddie Mitman cut a cake to celebrate Drain Doctor’s 20th anniversary.

Jan and Freddie Mitman cut a cake to celebrate Drain Doctor’s 20th anniversary.

– the UK’s premier combined emergency plumbing and drain repair service – is planning a year of celebrations to mark 20 years in business.

The company was launched in the UK in 1993 by husband and wife team Freddie and Jan Mitman who are still ‘at the helm’ today.

They started with just a single ‘test’ area before starting to sell franchises to motivated individuals who wanted to build their own businesses with the benefits of a national brand.

The company swiftly expanded and Drain Doctor Plumbing now has franchisees across the country.

The business has been built on the Drain Doctor ethos of delivering ‘dazzling service’ which includes a full guarantee on all work, a genuine 24-hour service with no call-out charge and no extra charges for calls outside of normal working hours. Customers get a fixed price quotation so they know exactly how much they will have to pay before work is started.

Technicians are trained not just with technical skills – including the latest techniques such as closed circuit camera drain surveys and no-dig drain repairs – but in customer care. As well as a full set of tools and parts each Drain Doctor van carries a special red carpet which is used to protect the floor in the working area. The technicians wear overshoes while in customers’ homes and clear up carefully after every job.

The company is a full member of the British Franchise Association and franchise sales director Jan Mitman was recently elected as chair of the BFA’s Midlands Forum.

Company chairman Freddie Mitman said: “The continuing success of Drain Doctor is testament to the hard work of our franchisees as they develop their businesses.

“Particularly over the past few years, when the economy generally has been in poor shape, our franchisees have demonstrated that with the Drain Doctor system it is possible to grow a profitable franchise business.

“We are delighted to be able to mark our first 20 years in business and are now looking forward to the next two decades!”

Drain Doctor franchisees across the UK and Ireland, together with their customers, will be invited to join in the celebrations as the 20th anniversary year gets under way.

Take Einstein’s advice – be a plumber

English: Albert Einstein Français : Portrait d...

English: Albert Einstein Français : Portrait d’Albert Einstein (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Back in 1954 in an interview with Reporter Albert Einstein said: “If I would be a young man again and had to decide how to make my living, I would not try to become a scientist or scholar or teacher. I would rather choose to be a plumber … in the hope to find that modest degree of independence still available under present circumstances.”

If he had become a plumber he wouldn’t have been internationally famous – but he would have beaten the economic slump. As recession continues, the economic experiences of the past few years have made increasing numbers of people seek a recession-resistant business opportunity.

The Drain Doctor system is delivering solid financial results for franchisees because, even in a recession, people with a plumbing emergency still need to call a plumber. Because of Drain Doctor’s reputation and levels of service, the plumber they call is increasingly likely to be the local Drain Doctor franchisee.

Starting your own business as a franchisee, rather than totally on your own, provides a considerable level of support and assistance if you choose the right franchise. Buying into a Drain Doctor franchise, which offers a largely recession-resistant business, provides further reassurance that if you are prepared to put in the work you can expect to gain real rewards.

Drain Doctor enables franchisees to be independent operators running their own businesses but with all the back-up that comes with being part of a large national organisation. With some other franchises you are left on your own. Drain Doctor offers great contacts with insurance companies and has a national account network that will help franchisees develop and grow their business.

Drain Doctor franchisees offer a full 24 hour per day seven-day per week service with no call out charges and they give fixed-price, no obligation quotes with a full guarantee on all their work.

Drain Doctor technicians are trained not just with technical skills – including the latest techniques such as closed circuit camera drain surveys and no-dig drain repairs – but in customer care that is reflected in such things as wearing overshoes while in customers’ homes and clearing up carefully after every job.

Dundee Drain Doctor scoops national award

Trevor and Alison Muir collect their award from Freddie Mitman (centre).

The Dundee franchise business of Drain Doctor Plumbing, which covers the city and surrounding areas, has crowned another successful year by being presented with an award at the national group’s annual awards ceremony.

The award is given to franchisees who have generated outstanding turnover related to the population of the area they serve.

Group founder and chairman Freddie Mitman presented franchisee Trevor Muir with his trophy at a gala awards night at the Crown Plaza Hotel in the historic Belgian city of Bruges during Drain Doctor’s 18th annual convention.

Freddie Mitman said: “This award  recognises special achievements in the franchise network. Winning proves that sustained growth can be achieved despite size and that it’s the franchisee who ‘makes it happen’”.

Trevor has had his franchise since 2005. Since then he has grown the business to include a number of additional services including contract guttering replacement. In fact, it was a wholesale guttering replacement at Dundee FC’s Dens Park stadium that contributed to his growth in 2011.

The job was the franchise’s largest contract of this kind to date. Much of the guttering around the stands was brought down during heavy snow in February. Drain Doctor was called in to replace it. So much of it had come down that Trevor had to renew the whole guttering system.

Trevor said: “Guttering is just one of the services offered by Drain Doctor. I aim to continue to give businesses and householders in Dundee and the surrounding area the same ‘dazzling’ level of service in plumbing and drainage which Drain Doctor provides across the rest of the UK. Experience has taught me the importance of delivering a premium service on time every time and this has been borne out by this recognition.

“Joining Drain Doctor Plumbing was most definitely the best thing I have done. I investigated several franchise options when I decided to launch a new business and was impressed by Drain Doctor Plumbing’s professionalism. It allows me to be my own boss and introduce innovative new ideas but with all the support of a national organisation, a fact that is reflected in the winning of this award.”

Congratulations to Trevor and the team for a great year and best wishes for continued success.

Flooding despite the drought

A CCTV inspection of the drain will show the nature and location of the problem.

Despite a drought being declared and hosepipe bans being put in place, in an ironic climatic twist communities in the South West have been disrupted by flooding caused by recent high rainfall. Businesses elsewhere in England could also face serious disruption and may lose customers if they don’t take steps to prevent flooding, warns the UK’s largest emergency plumbing and drainage company.

Drain Doctor Plumbing is urging businesses to make sure their drains are free of any blockages to ensure the potential risk of flooding is minimised. A simple CCTV drain survey can help to identify any blockages or potential problems.

Drain Doctor Plumbing’s chairman Freddie Mitman said: “Many people think flooding is something that won’t happen to them but the risk is there. Being unprepared simply means the chance of an incident increases.

“Although insurance policies can cover damage to property, damage to businesses in terms of lost working hours and even lost clients is often not covered. This is why it is vitally important for businesses to take the time now to make sure their drains are clear of any blockages and are in good working order.

“The Association of British Insurers predicts that coastal floods and storm damage will increase significantly over the next 50 years. Inland, more frequent heavy rainstorms and increased winter rainfall could result in more flooding from rivers.

“This spells trouble for businesses across the country which aren’t adequately prepared for the damage flooding can do.”

Father and son open new Drain Doctor business for Glasgow and Stirling

Jimmy and Andrew Smith have joined Drain Doctor covering Glasgow and Stirling

All at Drain Doctor would like to extend a warm welcome to Football playing father and son Jimmy and Andrew Smith. They are setting up their own plumbing and drainage business to service the north of Glasgow and Stirling as part of the national Drain Doctor network.

Jimmy describes the decision to go into business with his son as “a coincidence of timing”. He has recently retired from running his own property business (after a previous career as a publican) and Andrew has just left Glasgow Caledonian University where he studied construction management – and then stayed on for a further year as vice president of the students’ association.

The combination of business and practical skills arising from Jimmy’s experience and Andrew’s studies and post-graduate work make them an ideal team for a franchise.

Both men will initially be undertaking plumbing and drainage work themselves but they have already recruited their first technician to work with them. They aim soon to have a number of fully-equipped vans and fully-trained technicians, allowing them to devote their attention to managing and growing the business.

Jimmy says: “Things came together at just the right time as Andrew left university. I was getting bored in retirement and am looking forward to getting back into business.”

Both Jimmy and Andrew are keen footballers. Andrew was responsible for sports as vice president of the university students’ association and Jimmy is a qualified coach and referee.
